To Death and Beyond

thought, and they thought, and they thought. Who are we? Where do we come from? And where are we going to?

So I 'take my hat off' to our forefathers. Many things puzzled them in those far off days. And now, in this modern 'we-know-it-all' age, we are the 'masters of the universe' as far as we are concerned. But are we really? I think we are just as naïve and ignorant as they were in their day. We are, perhaps, a tiny little bit nearer to knowing and understanding everything. On a scale of one to a hundred (or a million, or a trillion, or a zillion, or infinity?), perhaps our forefathers reached number one. If so, then we may have reached number two.

There are many things in this world of ours that we still do not understand, and perhaps never will?
That capability – to communicate and record our past developments – turned out to be the key to allow us modern (but just as simple as our forefathers were actually) human beings to build on the discoveries and developments of the previous generations. We are not so clever (compared to our forefathers) as we think – they were much more intelligent than we realise. The only thing they lacked was language (which they eventually achieved – and that is why we are where we are today) plus the ability to record their discoveries and developments, resulting in their descendants (us) not having to re-discover them over and over again, for generation after generation.

But they had a 'bee in their bonnet'. A bee that we 'pooh-pooh' nowadays. Who did they think they were? Who do we think we are? They looked up at the stars, they watched the Sun on its daily cycle and they saw the Moon nearly every single night. And then they thought. And this was a mighty think.

They knew nothing of the Cosmos. Nobody did. Nobody (as far as we know) did. But they
Have you ever been there: to death and beyond? You may not realise it, but you probably have. What does it mean 'To death and beyond?' Surely no one can ever have been to 'death', never mind 'beyond' and lived to tell the tale. You might be surprised how many of us actually have – including you.

We are all modern, highly educated, intelligent 'know-it-alls' nowadays aren't we? Well, we think we are. But, in actual fact, we are no more intelligent than our so-called 'stone-age' forefathers were, from thousands of years ago. So why do we now know how to build computers, fly to the moon, design digital televisions (easy-peasy really), etc. when they didn’t? It is much too difficult to explain in one or two paragraphs, so I won’t even try. What I will say, however, is that the ability to multi-task, the development of language and the ability to communicate and leave records of what we have learned (in written form) gave us – the modern human beings that currently rule the earth – the ability to pass on, from generation to generation: the knowledge needed to allow our descendents to progress.
